Spiritual direction is contemplative and reflective. We think supervision of spiritual direction should be too.
SGM’s Supervision of Spiritual Directors Training Intensive is firmly grounded in the best practices of reflective supervision. During this four day training you will engage practically with three models of supervision applicable to spiritual direction. The Seven-Eyed Model, The Roles Model and the Imaginative Model. We will also cover:
Defining supervision
Traits of a good supervisor
Traits of a good supervisee
Dynamics of the supervisory relationship,
Development of the supervisee and working with their issues/goals
Contemplative supervision
Contracts/the purpose of the relationship
There will be role play demonstrations and practical application in trios as well as a foray into supervision of trainee spiritual directors. There will be reading but no written assignments.
What is unique about SGM’s supervision training?
SGM’s supervision training has been offered biannually for many years. Andrew Pritchard and John McAlpine prepared the original material which was refreshed by Jeannie Martin-Blaker and Jane Wilkinson, both trained supervisors, and most recently by Dr David Crawley, who wrote, with Dr Karen Kemp, the new Laidlaw supervision courses.
This supervision training is designed specifically for spiritual directors, but is applicable to pastoral ministry situations. Many faith-based organisations are seeking external supervisors for their staff. Some of these recognise the SGM course and include supervisors with this training on their lists of supervisors (providing the supervisor assents to the requirements of that organisation/denomination).
Your Facilitators for 2024
This 2024 iteration of the Supervision of Spiritual Directors Training will be presented by David Crawley and Fran Francis, the Coordinators of the Spiritual Directors Formation Programme. Both have trained as spiritual directors and supervisors as well as having significant practical miles on the clock.
We are sure you will enjoy the hands-on learning that SGM always offers, along with a great environment at the Home of Compassion and the inspiring and stimulating collegial relationships which grace this ministry.
